Museums Without Walls Project

Formation Gallery

I am the curator + co-founder of Formation Gallery, a mobile art gallery that organized "art bombs" to provide access to contemporary art in nontraditional and unconventional ways.

Formation Gallery was a year-long project where artists and their artwork were taken outside the conventional gallery setting and placed in public spaces with their works creating the walls of the gallery. As the public passed through this interactive gallery space, they freely engaged with the artworks and artists. This resulted in powerful connections and conversations with artists regarding their work. Participants left with an overall need to engage more with art and their community.

By providing a space for an art intervention, people that may have never experienced a museum or gallery had the opportunity to interact with artists that actively facilitated conversations regarding art, social issues, and their own artistic practice.

This project came from an awareness that museums are inaccessible to many but necessary for understanding our place in our community’s and humanity’s history. It was the need to activate spaces with artists and their works, to meet people where they are at: In the streets. The goal was to remove the intimidation factor of museums and galleries and allow people to interact freely with art. When a visitor was able to speak to an artist directly, there was a deeper connection to the works and to the art itself. Formation gallery provided a platform for people to enjoy art and to learn about it on a deeper level.

SUBLMNAL was a changing and active exhibition that showcased works that dealt with the areas in our lives that are unknown, unseen, or unsensed. Many works dealt with identity, sexuality, gender, politics, and the space between consciousness and the unconscious workings of our lives and minds. All works were developed specifically to be shown without the aid of walls or traditional gallery space. Many works were shown on smartphones, laptops, iPads, or projected onto the artist’s bodies. Planning and implementation of each event took months to develop and also to prepare the artists for each exhibition.
